The internet is not just a window leading to information from accross the world. There are dangers lurking in the virtual space as well.
Cybercrime in the guise of duping people of their money started with awards of huge lotteries, that leter turned into lucrative monetary benifits for just acting as " beneficiaries" of legacies left behind by " dead millionaires".
While many Indians are wary of these fake mails today, there are still some who fall prey to them, losing money anywhere between Rs 30,000-50,000.
Most of these rackets have been traced to foreign nationals trying to trap gullible indian to make quick buck.
"The culprits often tag names of popular lotteries in Europe to convince their victums of their "genuineness". In cases where people fall pray and agree to act as beneficiaries of some forgotten legacy of millionaires, They are convinced into paying in amount to the culprits as security deposity.
In some cases, the gullible are informed that the amount paid by them in to clear the consigment from the Indian customs and that the money has already reached the Indian shores," .
